The New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team defeated the Deacons of Bloomfield College 20-11 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up tonight at Commerce Bank Park in Somerset, NJ.
The Highlanders improve their record to 7-4 overall, 1-0 in the CACC while the Deacons fall to 4-15 overall, 0-1 in the conference.
The Deacons found themselves in trouble in the bottom half of the first when the Highlanders had the bases loaded and no outs for first baseman Austin DeRogatis. DeRogatis hit a sacrifice fly to right field hitting in the first run of the game. Third baseman Mike Turner sitting in the five hole blasted a 3-run rocket over the left field wall, putting the Highlanders up 4-0. Turner's home-run is his first of the season.
Designated hitter Webster Zachery gave the Deacons a boost in the top of the second when he hit a leadoff home-run, his first of the season.
In the bottom of the second Derrick McCain hit an RBI double to the warning track getting back the run the Deacons scored in the second.
Turner's second at-bat in the bottom of the third was his second home-run of the game and the season.
Zachery came through for the Deacons once again when he drove in his second run of the game with a double over the left fielders head.
The Highlanders left off where they started in the bottom of the third when leadoff hitter Justin Racz singled to left field. Junior Derrick McCain stepped up to the plate and hit a sky high 2-run homer over the right field wall, putting the Highlanders up 8-2. Designated hitter Rob Forbes kept the Highlanders going when he singled to right field, with senior catcher Jeff Potter on deck. Potter lined an RBI double to left field, and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Potter then scored on a pass ball.
The Deacons added three runs in the top of the sixth when shortstop Lino Mariot hit a 3-run shot over the center field wall, coming within six runs of the Highlanders. Lino's homerun was the fifth homerun of the game.
NJIT scored their thirteenth run of the day when CACC Rookie of the Week Craig Binkiewicz grounded out to the shortstop scoring Potter from third. Potter doubled to center and took third on a based ball to start the inning.
Bloomfield added six runs on seven hits in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Highlanders offense seemed too much for the Deacons.
The Highlanders added seven runs to their run total in the seventh and eighth inning. NJIT led 20-10 going into the top of the ninth inning, where Deacon centerfielder Alex Munez grounded out to the shortstop to end the three hour and fifty-five minute game.
Senior Chirs Legiadre earns the win pitching seven innings, scattering nine hits and striking out seven. Legiadre improves his record to 2-1. Bernardo Alvin records the loss falling to 0-4 pitching two innings, letting up six runs and striking out two.
The Highlanders were led by Turner going 4-for-6 with five RBI and four runs while McCain went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs.
For the Deacons, Webster Zachery hit for the cycle with three RBI and one run.
The Highlanders return to action on Friday March 25th when they host Wilmington College at Commerce Bank Park in Somerset, NJ
