The New Jersey Institute of Technology women's tennis team claimed its ninth win overall and its first win against an NCAA Division I opponent, sweeping Fairleigh Dickinson University, 7-0, Sunday night at the Tenafly Racquet Club.
NJIT is 9-4 overall and three of its four losses have come against NCAA Division I opponents. The Highlanders previously lost to Lafayette, Temple and Seton Hall, before blanking Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Highlanders, who were ranked 7th in the Northeast Region of Division II in the fall by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, are reclassifying and will face a Division I schedule next year. This year, they are facing a schedule of mostly Division II opponents, with some Division I foes mixed in.
None of the matches were close, with the Highlanders winning four of the singles matches--first, second, third and fifth--6-0, 6-0. Those matches were won by Iulia Doci (first), Fatima Kasem (second), Deepti Sanjai (third) and Chiori Koike (fifth). NJIT's Eva Salierno was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in fourth singles and Grace Bogdan won sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1.
NJIT won the three doubles matches by identical 8-0 scores, with Doci amd Koike winning at first, Salierno and Sanjai at second and Kasem and Rebeca Solorzano at third doubles.
The Highlanders are scheduled to host Pace at the Tenafly Racquet Club on Saturday at 7:15 pm.
