WEST POINT, NY -
Junior guard Jarell Brown scored a game-high 19 points, leading Army in a 60-40 men's basketball win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday night.
Brown scored 11 points in the first half and eight in the second for the Black Knights, who raised their record to 7-2 with the victory. Army also got a double-double from standout freshman big man Chris Walker, who finished with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Matt Bell added 12 points for the home team.
The only double-figure scorer for the Highlanders was senior guard Clayton Barker, who netted 10 points before fouling out in just 18 minutes of action. Nesho Milosevic scored 9 points and blocked a game-high and personal career-high three shots. The sophomore's five rebounds led NJIT.
Army led at the end of a low-scoring first half, 22-15. Both teams experienced long first-half droughts. Army was stuck on 15 points for over six minutes, from 10:17 to the 4:05 mark. NJIT was scoreless over the last 7:12 of the half.
The Black Knights started the second half quickly, jumping out 9-2 and taking a 31-19 lead with 16:01 left in the game.
However, NJIT regained its balance and went on a 9-2 spurt of its own over the next 3:36, closing to within five points of the lead, 33-28, after a Dan Stonkus layup with 12:35 left. Stonkus, who made all four of his shots, finished with eight points.
The Highlanders could not get closer, as Army regained control thanks to a 16-0 run covering 5:19, for a 49-28 advantage at the 7:16 mark. Five different Army players scored in the outburst.
Points off turnovers helped Army. The Black Knights had an advantage there, turning 22 NJIT turnovers into 12 points. The Highlanders, meanwhile got just two points off of 18 Army miscues.
NJIT is off until Monday at 7 pm, when it hosts Stony Brook in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
