Nov. 8, 2006

Box Score

NEWARK, NJ - Kristy Haeckel and Agnieszka Pregowska combined for 26 kills and New Jersey Institute of Technology picked up its second win of the season over Manhattan, 3-0, Wednesday night in the Fleisher Athletic Center.

It was the final home match of the season for the Highlanders, who picked up their ninth win overall. The win total, with one match remaining, matches NJIT's wins total in 2005, a remarkable feat under the circumstances of the Highlanders move up this year to face NCAA Division I.

NJIT did not gain the upper hand until late in the first game, as the Highlanders won, 30-24. The match stayed tight well into the second game, before an NJIT spurt around the midpoint, setting up a 30-20 win. The Highlanders secured the match, 30-23, in game three.

Haeckel produced a match-best 14 kills, followed closely by Pregowska, who had 12 kills against just one attack error in 26 attempts for a .423 hitting percentage. Danielle Thompson got 34 assists, while Haeckel and classmate Kasha Hornstein shared match honors with 4 service aces apiece. NJIT had a 10-6 edge in service aces. Hornstein led the Highlanders with 22 digs and NJIT, playing a strong defensive game on the floor had four players reach double figures in digs, including Haeckel, who had 15.

Manhattan got 11 kills from Whitney Judkins, while Alyssa Getzel had 31 assists and Ashley Watson had a match-high 24 digs. Sherryta Stokes served 3 aces, including two in a row late in the third game, before NJIT pulled away to clinch the match.

NJIT's only senior, Emese Gyuricza, was recognized before the game and she capped her home career with a kill on match point.

The Highlanders will wrap up the season on the road, traveling to Fairfield on Sunday at noon against Sacred Heart.
