Seton Hall spills Highlanders

NEWARK, NJ - It was a matter of winning the battle, but losing the war for New Jersey Institute of Technology women's tennis, as Iulia Doci won the top singles match for the Highlanders, but Seton Hall prevailed in the team score, 6-1, on the Fleisher Athletic Center courts Friday.

Doci, the NJIT sophomore, defeated Nadja Sein, 6-3, 6-4, to take first singles, but Seton Hall came out on top in the other five singles slots, although one match went to three sets and another was decided on a super tiebreaker.

The Pirates, playing their first dual match of the season, also won all three doubles matches, with first doubles going to a tiebreaker. NJIT, playing its first season against a Division I schedule, suffered its first dual match loss and is 2-1.

At second singles, Seton Hall's Amanda El-Tobgy edged NJIT's Isha Toor, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. Veronika Gerka of Seton Hall edge Highlander Chiori Koike in fifth singles, 6-0, 2-6 (10-2 super tiebreaker).

The doubles were all close. Sein and Edu Burduroglu of Seton Hall nipped Doci and Fatima Kasem, 9-8 (4) at first doubles. The Pirates won second and third doubles by identical 8-5 scores. In the second slot, El-Tobgy and Iva Gyurgina edged Toor and Fanny Aizier, while Gerka and Nathalie Ranger topped NJIT's Koike and Grace Bogdan.

The match, originally scheduled for Seton Hall, was moved to NJIT due to the weather.

The Highlanders are slated to visit Fordham on October 14 for a noon match.
