Highlanders Lose to Delaware State

DOVER, DE - Host Delaware State took a 3-1 win from New Jersey Institute of Technology in the Highlanders' second match at the Delaware State University Invitational in women's volleyball Saturday afternoon.

All four games were close, as Delaware State prevailed, 30-27, 28-30, 30-28 and 31-29. The loss evened NJIT's record in the tournament at 1-1, after the Highlanders opened with a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State on Friday. Delaware State, which also beat Winston-Salem, went to 2-0 with the win over NJIT.

Freshman Kristy Haeckel led the Highlanders with 19 kills, while Kasha Hornstein added 10 kills. Danielle Thompson, the sophomore setter, was credited with 46 assists.

Hornstein, also a freshman, registered a team-best 14 digs and a third freshman, Sabrina Baby had 10 digs. Baby had a team-high 5 service aces, followed by Kubra Tanrikulu, with 3 aces. Haeckel's 7 block assists led the Highlanders at the net.

NJIT faced Providence later Saturday afternoon to close out play in the tournament.
