JERSEY CITY, NJ -
Angelica Sepulveda recorded the first Division I shutout in New Jersey Institute of Technology women's soccer history, saving 13 shots over 110 minutes in the Highlanders' 0-0 double overtime tie at Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon.
NJIT, competing at the NCAA Division I level for the first time in 2006, had allowed one goal in its earlier win this season over Howard and had also allowed one goal in each of its two wins over Division I Delaware State in 2003 and 2005, when NJIT was a Division II program.
The game also marked a homecoming for Sepulveda, who resides in Jersey City and graduated from Dickinson High School there. She is an academic senior who walked on to the NJIT women's soccer team for the first time last year.
It was also something of a homecoming for Highlanders senior co-captain Cindy Bayiokos. The Staten Island, NY, product played her first two seasons at Saint Peter's before transferring to NJIT in time for the 2005 season. Before the game, Saint Peter's honored its senior class of players, who entered school as freshman classmates of Bayiokos.
Jillian Fueshko made 3 saves in 110 minutes to get the shutout on the Saint Peter's side.
Both teams missed out on what would have been opportunities to break the other team's hearts. In the closing seconds of regulation, Saint Peter's got off a shot that beat Sepulveda, but missed going into the net. Later, with less than 20 seconds left in the second overtime, the Highlanders got a two-on-one counterattack, but the shot from the top of the box went wide right.
NJIT will be off until October 30, when it closes the 2006 season with a 7 pm home game against North Dakota State on Lubetkin Field. NJIT will honors its seniors--Cindy Bayiokos, Sepulveda, Bruna Lotufo, Joanna Powdhar and Breanna Turnbull before the game.
