NEWARK, NJ -
Three different players scored goals for Monmouth, as the Hawks, ranked 12th in the Mid-Atlantic Region by Soccer Buzz, took a 3-0 decision from New Jersey Institute of Technology in women's soccer on Lubetkin Field Thursday night.
NJIT played a solid defensive game all night, holding the visitors, who are 11-2-2 on the season, off the board until the 39th minute. The first Monmouth goal was especially impressive, as Amy Hoyer gained control of the ball and launched a hard shot that found the back of the net from 35 yards out.
The Hawks added a second goal just 22 seconds before intermission, when Iliana Blackshear sent a ball from left wing from a difficult angle. Blackshear's shot, taken just before she reached the end line, trickled across the goal mouth and gently caromed in off the far post at 44:38.
The only goal of the second half was on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Monmouth's Lisa Esposito was fouled in the penalty area at 77:25 and Danielle Rosanova converted the pk at 77:27.
Angelica Sepulveda played all 90 minutes in goal for the Highlanders and she made 10 saves. For Monmouth, Katie Buffa started and played the first 85:55, before Adele Kozlowski came on for the final 4:05 to close out the shutout.
NJIT's next scheduled contest is Saturday at 1 pm against Saint Peter's in Jersey City, NJ.
