NJIT track and field athlete John Porteous from Wood-Ridge, NJ has been selected as Male Athlete of the Week.
The junior became the first-ever Division I Regional Qualifier for NJIT earning a spot at the NCAA East Regional held in Jacksonville, Florida on May 29. Porteous, one of 48 qualifiers for the preliminaries races in the East Regional, , finished 37th overall with a time of 52.82 and seventh in his heat.
Here is a look at Porteous’ resume for the 2013-14 track and field season:
-First-ever Division I regional qualifier earning a spot at the NCAA Regional in the men’s 400-meter hurdles; finished 37th overall
-Ranked in the top 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the men’s 400-meter hurdles and 200-meter hurdles by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA Division I report released on May 19. He ranks fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (51.67 and sixth in the men’s 200 meters (21.05).
-Recorded a third-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the 2014 IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a new school-record mark of 51.67.
-Captured the men’s 100-meters title at the Matthew Vassar Twilight Meet
-At the 2014 Brick City Classic, won the men’s 200 meters
-Placed fourth overall in the 400-meter hurdles at the Penn Relays (top finisher out of his section)
-Picked up four first-place finishes at the 2014 Collegiate Track Conference Outdoor Championships in the men’s 400-meter, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles and 4x100 relay team. The NJIT track and field team captured its second straight title at the CTC Outdoor Championships
-At the Rider Invitational, earned first place in the men’s 400-meter’s and 4x100 relay
-Set two meet records at the Roadrunner Invitational, capturing the 200-meters and 110 meter hurdles titles
-Top performer for NJIT at the Monmouth Season Opener, recording a first-place finish in the men’s 400-meters and 200-meters
-In the team’s spring season opener at the 49ers Classic, earned a third-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles
