NJIT fencer David Kong from Rutherford, NJ has been selected as NJIT Male Athlete of the Week for his performance at the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships.
 
The freshman earned an 18^th place finish in the men's foil competition at the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships Sunday hosted by Ohio State in French Field House.
 
The 6-foot-1 Highlander recorded a 3-5 mark Sunday  combining for an 8-15 overall record at the NCAA Championship for an 18th finish out of 24 fencers.
 
Kong picked up wins Sunday against Christian Vastola from NYU (5-4), Michael Woo from Harvard (5-4) and Kristjan Archer of Notre Dame (5-2) of the UK World Team.  Kong dropped a close (5-4) decision against 2012 Olympian Gerek Meinhardt of Notre Dame.
 
NJIT placed 23rd in the nation in the combined men's and women's team championship. The Highlanders placed higher than UC San Diego and Cleveland State, the only other schools with only one fencer present.
