Freshman Carolina Zanotta was named Great West Conference Newcomer of the Year and honored to the all-GWC 2nd team this past weekend as the NJIT women's tennis captured its second straight Great West Conference title topping second-seeded Seattle, 4-1, at the 2012 Great West Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the HEB Center hosted by Texas-Pan American.
In the championship match, doubles pair Monika Graff and Zanotta teamed for an 8-3 victory at third doubles over #2 Seattle's Lindsey Newman and Gabriella Weissmann. Zanotta earned a point for the Highlanders at fifth singles winning by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1.
In the semifinals vs. #5 Chicago State, Zanotta was a double-winner on the day at third doubles and fifth singles for NJIT.
Zanotta, from Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, closed out her first season at NJIT with a 23-4 overall record. Zanotta went 12-2 at fifth singles, 5-0 at the fourth spot and 5-1 in tournament play.
