Freshman Andres Alban captured the “B” Doubles Main Draw title with doubles partner Fraser Croad Sunday on the final day of the Columbia Invitational.
The duo defeated Fordham's Gram and Mike Puntillo, 8-3 and then topped Cornell's Berman and Wilton, 8-6, on Friday advancing to the finals against FDU's Gricheno and Skvarka. The pair won 8-4 over the Knights earning the title.
In the 'A” Singles Consolation, freshman Alban fell in the round of 16 in the A Singles Main draw, the rookie's first opponent in the consolation round was Fairfield's Ian Tesmond. Alban won his quarterfinal match by scores, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) advancing to the semifinals against Marist's Joris Van Eck. Alban dropped the first set, 6-1, but bounced back with a 6-2, 1-0(2) victory earning a spot in the consolation finals Sunday against Cornell's Alex Sidney. Alban won the first set, 6-4, but Sidney answered with a 6-2, 1-0(9) victory for the title.
