Chris Flores, who tied a program assists record in one game and scored the winning basket in another game led the NJIT men's basketball team to a 2-0 week.
Flores, who is second on the team for the season, scoring 12.7 points per game, and also leads the team in assists (58) and 3-point baskets (34), had a stellar week, as the Highlanders opened conference play with a pair of home victories, defeating Houston Baptist on Thursday (85-62) and then Texas-Pan American on Saturday (58-57).
In the earlier win over Houston Baptist, Flores made half of his 10 shots to finish with 10 points, but he also dished out a career-best eight assists, tying the NJIT Division I record that had been reached twice before, once in the first year of Division I competition (2006) by Andrew Engel and once by Flores' classmate
PJ Miller in 2010. Flores combined the record-tying eight assists with just one turnover in 39 minutes of play.
For the week, Flores averaged 13.5 points and shot 11-for-22 from the field, including 2-for-5 on 3-pointers and he was 3-for-4 on foul shots. He had 11 assists and four steals in the two games.
Flores was also named Great West Conference Player of the Week.
