That year, the USFA named Mylnek as head coach of the U.S. Junior Team for a World Cup saber competition in Europe, at which the United States won six medals and six other medal round semifinalists.

As a competitor fencer, Mlynek spent several years on Poland's National team. He was twice a silver medalist in saber and three times a finalist in epee at Poland's National Championships. More recently, he won three consecutive gold medals at the Garden State games.

Mlynek earned his Master of Arts degree from the Academy of Physical Education in Krakow, Poland, in 1991. He resides in Elizabeth with his wife Jola.
