New to the NJIT fencing staff for 2014-15, Henry Kennard is a certified Prévôt of Foil by the United States Fencing Coaches Association, as well as being a 2008 graduate of St. John’s University in Queens, NY, where he was a 3-time All-American.
According to the USFCA official website, Prévôt is the second-highest of four certifications and, describes the site: “The Prévôt level is similar to the Master level professional fencing coach, with more emphasis on training fencers rather than other coaches … Prévôt candidates must pass a thorough test comprised of oral, written, and practical parts. The practical examination is given by a certified board of two USFCA Fencing Masters.”
A coach at the Brooklyn Bridge Fencing Club and Empire United Fencing before that, Kennard placed sixth in the NCAA championships as a fencer for St. John’s in 2004, 2007, and 2008 and was All-American second team in each of those years. A junior National Champion in 2004, Kennard was the first high school fencer in Massachusetts history to go undefeated (69-0) in his senior year.
