After playing on the road at Colgate Wednesday, the NJIT women's basketball team returns home for a three-game homestead to close out the month of November.
The Highlanders have fallen in the first two contests of the 2010-11 season (L, 55-72 vs. Navy; L, 58-85 at Colgate) and look to bounce back on Saturday against Rhode Island. This will be the second meeting between the two teams. The Rams lead the series (1-0) after defeating NJIT last season 51-47 in Kingston, RI, in the closing minutes.
NJIT is led by junior Melanie Griffin, the only Highlander averaging double-digits with 16.0ppg. Griffin registered double-figures in the first two contests of the season with a career-high 19 points vs. Navy in the season opener.
Sophomore forward Rayven Johnson is leading the Highlanders on the glass averaging 4.0rpg.
Rhode Island (1-1) will play its second road game of the season. The Rams defeated Colgate (59-47) in the season opener at home but fell on the road at Providence Wednesday (71-40).
The Rams had three players in double figures against Colgate led by Megan Shoniker's 18 points. Rhode Island had two players post double-doubles – Lara Gaspar (11 pts, 12 reb) and Sherrie Session (10 pts, 10 reb).
Shoniker led the Rams at Providence posting 14 points. Shoniker also leads the team in scoring at 16.0ppg and Gaspar is the team leader with 20 rebounds (10.0rpg).
