Sophomore Robyn Fairbanks and freshman Julie McMurray combined for 37 points leading Utah Valley State in their 71-40 victory over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at the McKay Center.
Fairbanks posted a double-double scoring 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Fairbanks scored 14 of her 22 points in the first half while teammate McMurray netted 11 of her 15 points in the second half.
Fairbanks opened up the game with a lay-up while the Highlanders answered back with back to back three pointers from freshman Colleen Vogel and senior co-captain Kelly Crowe.
The Highlanders led 10-8, four minutes into the game. Fairbanks then knotted the game at 10 with a lob pass over the defense from senior Veva Ahlstrom. The Wolverines pulled ahead 14-10 on back-to-back baskets by Fairbanks.
Utah Valley State took their largest lead of the half on a three-pointer by freshman Asumi Nakayama with ten minutes remaining and increasing their lead to 21-10.
The Highlanders rallied when freshmen Katie Piekielski and Vogel hit consecutive three-pointers bringing the NJIT within nine of the Wolverines.
The Wolverines held the Highlanders scoreless in the last 2:45 while closing out the half on a 9-0 run.
Opening up the second half 36-19, the Wolverines scored the first four points as sophomore Jill Dickinson sparked the Highlanders hitting a lay-up and completing one of two free throws at the line.
The Highlanders could not get closer, as Utah Valley State went on an 12-2 run closing out the game.
For the Highlanders, senior Aine O'Dwyer and Vogel both notched 10 points apiece. O'Dwyer brought down a team-high seven rebounds. Following behind was Dickinson who chipped in eight points.
The Highlanders return to action when they host North Dakota State on Thursday, March 1 at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center. Tip off is set for 7pm.
