Sophomore center Robyn Fairbanks scored a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, leading three double-figure scorers and Utah Valley State in a 79-48 women's basketball win over New Jersey Institute of Technology Thursday night at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Fairbanks scored 13 points in the first half and four in the second for the Wolverines, who raised their record to 11-10 with the victory. Julie McMurray added 13 points while Asumi Nakayama and Sandy Marvin scored 11 and 10 points respectively for the visiting team.
For the Highlanders sophomore Jill Dickinson and freshman Colleen Vogel netted nine points apiece. Following behind was senior co-captain Aine O'Dwyer who chipped in eight. Kelly Crowe and freshman Kathryn Wighton, pulled down seven rebounds for NJIT.
Utah Valley State led at the end of first half, 45-22. Utah shot 59 percent from the field (19-32) and 50 percent from behind the arc (6-12). NJIT was scoreless over the last 7:44 of the half until freshman Taiwo Oyelola sunk two free throws with 3:50 remaining in the half. In the last 2:27 the Highlanders posted eight points.
The Wolverines started the second half quickly, jumping out 6-2 and taking a 51-24 lead with 17:30 left in the game.
Points off turnovers helped Utah. The Wolverines had an advantage, turning 20 NJIT turnovers into 21 points. The Highlanders; meanwhile got just two points off of 13 Wolverine turnovers.
The Highlanders return to action on Saturday, February 3, when they host Texas-Pan American at 2pm. This will be the second meeting for the two; Texas-Pan American defeated NJIT on January 13, 55-44.
