Box Score
NEWARK, NJ -
Senior Steven Holloway scored three goals, two of them assisted by Tom Gray, as Monmouth scored twice in each half to defeat New Jersey Institute of Technology, 4-0, in men's soccer Wednesday night on Lubetkin Field.
Holloway opened the scoring at 19:52, when he scored off the rebound of a hard shot by Gray. He later accounted for both of his team's second-half goals, tallying off an assist from John Castro in the 58th minute and then closing the scoring at 80:45, finishing the second of two rapid fire shots set up by Gray's pass.
The other goal for Monmouth (3-2) was unassisted, as Damon Wilson fired home a goal after intercepting the ball from NJIT (1-2) outside the top of the penalty area.
The visitors outshot the Highlanders, 21-6, forcing both NJIT goalkeepers to make some difficult saves. Josh Osit played 74 minutes and made 5 saves, while yielding 3 goals. Collin Cunning played the last 16 minutes, allowing a goal and stopping four shots.
Monmouth also used two goalkeepers in recording the shutout. Starter Daniel Schenkel played 84 minutes and made 3 saves, while Drew Rayner went the last six minutes without having to make a save. Schenkel's best stop came near the end of his day's work, when he stepped a header by NJIT's Jo Rene Valentine.
The Highlanders, who have played the first three matches at home, will be away for the first time this weekend, playing in a tournament at Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn, NY. The tournament opens with a 5 pm game on Friday vs. Fordham and NJIT takes on host LIU on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
