The New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team was swept by Caldwell College, 7-2, 12-8 today in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Highlanders fall to 16-14 overall, 9-9 in the conference while Caldwell improves to 15-17 overall, 8-7 in the conference.
NJIT was led by a trio of players during the doubleheader. Derrick McCain hit 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs. McCain's homerun in the second game topped him at 100 hits for his career. Austin DeRogatis went 2-for-7 with four RBI and one run while freshman Craig Binkiewicz hit 3-for-6 with two runs.
In the first game, the Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Landon Viessy grounded out to third, scoring Tommy Murphy who led the inning off with a single to right field.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the second on a triple by Jorge Torres who advanced home on a Highlander throwing error.
NJIT found themselves in trouble in the top of the fourth when the Cougars posted five runs, on six hits and one error pushing their lead to 7-0.
The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Austin DeRogatis hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season.
Caldwell extended their lead in the fifth tagging on three more runs on two hits.
Dereck York (3-3) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings where he struck out three batters and gave up four hits. Rob Forbes (2-4) was credited with the loss where he pitched 3.1 innings fanning two batters.
In the second game, Caldwell opened the game posting six runs on six hits. Chris Chiarappa had a three-run homerun over the left field wall recording three RBI and jumping ahead 6-0.
NJIT fought back in the bottom of the first tacking on three runs on three hits. Derrick McCain's RBI single to right scored Binkiewicz, who doubled to lead off the inning. DeRogatis hit a two-out single to center recording two RBI and coming within three runs of Caldwell.
In the bottom of the third, McCain hit a two-run homerun over the right field wall, decreasing the Cougar lead to one.
The Cougars answered in the fifth and sixth posting five runs on five five hit pushing ahead 11-5.
The Highlanders rallied in the bottom of the seventh posting three runs on two hits, but a ground-out double play ended the Highlanders chances and the game ended in a 12-8 loss.
Cougar pitcher Anthony DeRogatis (2-0) earned the win pitching 4.0 innings, fanning seven and letting up five hits while Chris Legiadre (4-3) records the loss giving up six hits.
The Highlanders return to action Saturday, April 22nd when they host USP in a CACC doubleheader match-up at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is set for noon.
