The New Jersey Institute of Technology women's tennis team lost its 2005 season opener, falling to visiting Clarion of Pennsylvania, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
Chiori Koike, who claimed victory in second singles (6-4, 6-4), picked up the point for the Highlanders.
Eva Salierno, in first singles, and Deepti Sanjai, in third singles, each lost three-set decisions. Salierno won the first set, 6-1, before falling in the next two (3-6, 0-6). Sanjai fought back from a 1-6 loss in the first set to take the second set, 7-6, before losing the decisive set, 3-6.
Salierno and Koike, playing first doubles, absorbed a 5-8 loss against Clarion's number one Cori Rombach and its number two, Kristen Jack, who had lost to Koike in singles.
