A goal by Dena Baskous in the final 17 minutes was the difference in a 1-0 win Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer win for New Jersey Institute of Technology at Wilmington. The victory extended NJIT's unbeaten streak to six games, which includes five wins and a tie.
The Highlanders built on their school-record overall win total, moving up to 8-4-2, which includes a 7-1-2 record in the CACC. Since starting the season 1-3, NJIT is 6-1-2, with the only coming on September 24, 2-0, against Holy Family in the Highlanders' lone conference defeat.
Aside from the 2-0 loss to Holy Family, NJIT has not allowed more than one goal in any of the last nine matches, which include five shutout wins and a scoreless tie.
Baskous, the sophomore defender, picked up her third goal of the season at 73:33, assisted by senior Erin Salgado.
Baskous, who is in her first season with NJIT after transferring from national power UConn, has scored once in each of the last three games. Salgado's assist was her first of the season and seventh of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth on NJIT's career list. Her 33 career points are within two of the all-time lead.
NJIT goalkeeper Bruna Lotufo collected 8 saves in raising her school-record shutout total to seven. Wilmington's Catie Joynes stopped 13 shots, as NJIT outshot the home team, 21-11.
The Highlanders have two regular season games remaining. They will visit St. Rose in Albany, NY, on Sunday for a non-conference game, before heading to Philadelphia University for a CACC matchup on October 26.
