BLOOMSBURG, PA -
The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's tennis team competed in the Wilson/ITA East Regionals hosted by Bloomsburg University over the weekend.
In the "B" doubles, the NJIT team of Adrian Munoz and Mikel Lawandy reached the quarterfinals. The NJIT duo defeated teams from Millersville (8-1) and Philadelphia University (8-2) to reach the quarters, where it lost, 8-3, to the eventual champions from Concordia (NY), Tufan Oztug and Sabyassacchi Bose. Oztug also won the "B" singles crown.
NJIT's "A" doubles team of Steve Arlt and Ramy Lawandy reached the round of 16 with an 8-3 win over the team from Slippery Rock. Arlt and Lawandy were ousted by Dowling, 8-4.
In singles play, NJIT did not win in the "A" group, but Ramy Lawandy won twice to reach the "B" round of 16, while Mikel Lawandy and Roger Wang each advanced a round with opening wins, before being eliminated.
Ramy Lawandy beat Jim Norris of Slippery Rock, 6-4, 6-3, and then Philadelphia U's Viet Trinh, 6-2, 6-3. Ramy went out in a tight match to Bloomsburg's Ryan Glubo, who prevailed on his home court, 6-4, 7-5.
Mikel Lawandy won his opening match, 6-1, 6-0, and Wang was a 6-2, 7-5 winner in his opening-round contest.
Student-athletes representing from throughout the region took part in the East Regionals, sponsored by the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) at Bloomsburg. The "A" champions in singles and doubles will advance to the ITA Nationals.
