GARDEN CITY, NY -
Adelphi scored on a penalty kick just 2:24 into the match, seizing control it never relinquished in a 3-1 men's soccer win over New Jersey Institute of Technology in Atlantic Soccer Conference play Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers, who upped their ASC record to 2-3, scored first on Oliver Skelding's penalty kick at 2:24.
NJIT, which is 0-3-2 in the ASC with one conference game still to play, was able to operate in the offensive end, but could not draw even before Adelphi's Matt Smith made it 2-0 when he scored off a rebound in the 24th minute.
The Highlanders continued to keep the ball in the attacking part of the field, but they could not convert and trailed at the break, 2-0.
Adelphi picked up its third goal at 63:40, as Andrew Worth tallied from close in front of the net.
NJIT, which had an earlier shot carom off the crossbar, got on the board when freshman Clay Smith tallied his first college goal on an assist from Eddie Romero six minutes from the close of the contest.
NJIT goalkeeper Collin Cunning made 3 saves and senior defender Pablo Ponce prevented what would have been another goal when he cleared a shot off the goal line after it had beaten Cunning. Adelphi keeper Michael Hurley did not make any saves.
The Highlanders have two games remaining on their schedule. They will host Lafayette in the home finale on Lubetkin Field Tuesday at 7 pm. That will be followed by a road game at ASC-leading Hartwick on Sunday, November 6, at 1 pm in Oneonta, NY.
