Wagner Uses Second-Half Comeback to Edge Highlanders, 10-8

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Wagner defeated NJIT men's lacrosse 10-8 in a second half comeback on Saturday, where they outscored the Highlanders 10-5.

Joe Lomeli and John Roach each had a pair of goals for NJIT (1-10), while Aaron Forster added three assists. Freshman Davis Carr and sophomore Ryan Bradway added a goal and an assist a piece. The Highlanders also received goals from Matt Cechini and Jesse Rice.

For the Seahawks (5-5) William McMenamin tallied four goals, while twin brother Patrick McMenamin recorded two goals and three assists. Andrew Streilein also added a goal and three assists for Wagner.

Carr opened the scoring for NJIT at 9:31 in the first quarter off a pass from Forster to give the Highlanders the early lead.

The next NJIT goal that started with a caused turnover by Rich Brunje, came from a quick counter attack where Roach scored down low on a pass from Carr to put the Highlanders up by two going into the second period.

Marzullo made three big saves in the first, stopping a point blank shot by William McMenamin, to keep the Seahawks off the board in the first.

Cechini scored his first goal of season and the only goal of the second quarter from 10 yards out off a pass from Patrick Benton to give NJIT a three goal cushion.

Marzullo made eight saves in the second period, the most the sophomore has ever recorded in one period. It was the the first time the Highlanders ever shut out a team for two consecutive periods.

Wagner came back by scoring four unanswered goals in the third quarter.

Rice would tie the game up at 4 with a shot from 12 yards out off a pass from Forster, which would stay the score going into the fourth and final period.

Wagner was first to score in the fourth quarter, but Bradway answered back with an unassisted goal at 12:01.

Wagner scored three more goals to put the Seahawks up 8-5.

Lomeli scored to bring the Highlanders within 2, but Wagner answered back to again extend their lead.

Roach and Lomeli would add two more goals to bring the Highlanders within one, but Patrick McMenamin would give Wagner another goal making the final score 10-8.

Marzullo tied his career-best 16 saves in the loss while also grabbing six ground balls.

Seahawk goal keeper Matt Sefcik, who earned his fifth win of the season, which is a new Wagner program record in wins, tallied seven saves.

The Highlanders will host Manhattan on April 2nd at 4pm at Drew University.
