Men's Lacrosse Falls 16-3 at #16 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ – No. 16 Rutgers men's lacrosse ended a two game losing streak by defeating NJIT 16-3 under the lights on Friday.

The Highlanders (0-9) received goals from freshman Matt Brown, Ryan Darrow and junior Ryan Callaghan, while sophomore Jesse Rice added an assist.

Sophomore goalie Nick Marzullo made 15 saves in the loss, while adding a team-high four ground balls.

The Scarlet Knights (6-3), who outshot NJIT 48-1,5 were led by sophomore Jules Heningburg, who recorded three goals and assists, while senior Scott Bieda tallied two goals and three assists. Freshman Adam Charalambides also added a hat trick and assist. Rutgers added six other scorers.

The starting goalie for the Scarlet Knights, Kris Alleyne, made seven saves in the win and Alex Larson added two saves, while Jack Arye also got time between the pipes.

Rutgers was the first to score on an unassisted marker by Charalambides at 12:41 of the opening period.

Brown answered back for NJIT when he scored 10 yards out off a pass from Rice at 9:37.

Jeff George put the Scarlet Knights up with just over four minutes left, and just 30 seconds later Charalambides added his second goal of the game to extend the lead to 3-1.

Aaron Forster took a shot for NJIT with 1 second remaining in the first period, but Alleyne made a great stop to keep the score at 3-1.

Heningburg opened the scoring in the second period for the Scarlet Knights and Christian Mazzone added a goal minutes later to put the home team comfortably ahead, 5-1.

Long stick midfielder Zack Sikora scored 10 seconds later to extend Rutgers lead to 6-1, which held up going into halftime.

Freshman Carson Metzker won five out of nine face-offs in the first half for the Highlanders.

The Scarlet Knights piled on another seven goals in the third quarter to go up 13-1.

NJIT's Darrow was the first to score in the fourth quarter, when he received the ball at half-field, made a breakaway run and took a shot from 15 yards out to add to the Highlander goals.

Rutgers poured in another three goals, before Callaghan scored his first goal of the season to give the Highlanders three.

NJIT will travel to Hanover, NH on March 22 to face Dartmouth at 3pm.
