Lomeli Extends Scoring Streak in NJIT Loss to #8 Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, NYJoe Lomeli kept his scoring streak alive at 17 consecutive games in the Highlanders 19-4 loss to #8 Hofstra on Tuesday at James M. Shuart Stadium.
 
NJIT (0-5) was led by sophomore John Roach's two goals, followed by sophomore Tyler Baggett, who added a goal and an assist. Freshman Carson Metzker tallied the first point of his career with an assist and went 9-19 on face-offs while also recording a season-best four ground balls.
 
The undefeated Pride (3-0) was led by Josh Byrne, who notched three goals and a game-high four assists, and Sam Llinares, who had a game-high five goals and one assist. Attackman Trevor Kupecky also added two goals and two assists.
 
Hofstra started the scoring in the 14th minute on goals by Llinares and Bryne, until Baggett put the Highlanders on the board with a man up goal at 10:06. The Pride posted five unanswered goals before Roach scored for NJIT with 23 seconds left off a pass from Metzker, making the score 7-2 at the end of the first period.
 
The Pride scored five goals in the second period, with Llinares and Byrne connecting on three of them,  to make the score 12-2 at half.
 
Lomeli would score NJIT's lone goal in the third period, his ninth of the season, but Hofstra added another five goals to make the score 17-2 after the third period.
 
The Highlanders kept the Pride to only two goals in the fourth period, and Roach recorded his second goal of the game on a pass from Baggett.
 
Sharing goalkeeping duties for the Highlanders were sophomore Nick Marzullo, who made nine saves, and freshman Cameron Cronk, who made a career-best six saves in the loss.
 
Hofstra's Jack Concannon earned another win for the 2016 season recording nine saves and three goals against, while Alex Gipe made an appearance in net for the Pride.
 
Next up, NJIT will travel to Hamden, CT on March 5 to take on Quinnipiac at 12pm.
