MADISON, NJ – The NJIT men's lacrosse team scored a season-high seven goals in a 10-7 loss to VMI on Saturday in Ranger Stadium at Drew University.
The Highlanders (0-4) had three players with two goals--sophomore
Tyler Baggett, freshman
Aaron Forster and sophomore
Joe Lomeli, while freshman
Patrick Benton also added a goal.
The Keydets (1-2) who won their first game of the 2016 season had seven different scorers, with sophomore Wesley Sanders recording four of their ten goals.
VMI took a 2-0 lead in the first period, until Baggett put the Highlanders on the board at 9:35 with his first goal of the season. The Keydets got another two goals from juniors Eric Shaver and Brad Nardella to end the period ahead 4-1.
Baggett opened the scoring in the first minute of the second period on another assisted goal, but VMI scored four unanswered goals to extend its lead over the Highlanders. With five seconds remaining in the period, Forster ran straight at the goal weaving through two defenders to put NJIT within five, 8-3, at the half.
The scoring was even in the third period, starting with the Highlanders. Forster scored his second goal of the game when he rolled around the net to put NJIT within four. Minutes later Benton scored his first goal of the season when he saw an opening to his left side and took advantage finishing in the upper left corner. The Keydets got another two goals from Sanders and sophomore Cody Sheetz (1g, 1a) to make the score 10-5 after the third period.
Joe Lomeli then extended his scoring streak to 16 games, when he scored the two lone goals of the fourth period. Lomeli's first goal came from a blast from 10 yards out in the twelfth minute. The sophomore's second goal came with Lomeli dodging the defense to his left, and a shot to the right corner.

Nick Marzullo recorded eight saves in the loss, while Keydet Joe Riccadonna earned his first win of the season with four saves.
NJIT will travel to Hempstead, NY on March 1 to take on Hofstra at 7pm.
