NEWARK, NJ—NJIT's
Mark Leiter, Jr. and
Ian Bentley were voted onto the 2013 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division I All-State team, Ira Thor, Sports Information Director for New Jersey City University and communications director of the NJCBA announced.
Leiter, the Highlanders senior right-handed pitcher from Lanoka Harbor, NJ was named to the second-team while Bentley, a freshman from Lancaster, PA, tabbed All-Rookie team honors.
Leiter holds a 5-8 record with a 4.37 ERA with five complete games and one shutout in 90 innings of work and a team-high 101 strikeouts. He holds the Division I record at NJIT with 103 strikeouts in a season, accomplished in 2011. The overall school record is 105, set by NJIT Hall of Famer Dan MacDonald in 1983, when the Highlanders were a Division III program.
He became the first NJIT player recognized as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after he struck out 20 Chicago State batters in a nine-inning 5-3 win. His 20 strikeouts were the most nationally in 2013 and the most in NJIT program history. Leiter was also named to four additional media outlets for his performance.
Bentley, the Highlanders crafty left-handed pitcher, has appeared in 16 games (15 in relief), with one start and a team-leading five saves (the second-highest single-season saves total for NJIT since 2007, its first Division I season).
He holds a 3-2 overall record in 37 innings pitched while striking out 24 batters.
The Highlanders will wrap up the regular season with single nine-inning games on Friday and Saturday against Houston Baptist, with first pitch scheduled for noon both days at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
