GREENSBORO
, NC
– The NJIT baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader from North Carolina A&T, 13-12 and 6-1, in action at War Memorial Stadium.

The two games were very different, as the Highlanders raised their 2010 record to 2-3 with the sweep of A&T (2-6).

In the opener, the Highlanders scored eight first-inning runs, but it turned out to be an offensive display for both teams, as the Aggies fought back and the score was tied, 12-12, before NJIT claimed the win with a run in the top of the ninth inning.

The story of the second game was dominant pitching performance by NJIT freshman Mark Leiter, who tossed a complete-game seven-inning gem, allowing a single unearned run on four hits, while striking out 11 and walking two. It was the second college start for Leiter.

NJIT brought home the winning run in the opener when 1B Kyle McCarthy was hit by a pitch leading off and freshman DH Matt Petrone followed with a single, his second hit of the day. A sacrifice bunt moved up the runners and RF Anthony Caiola grounded to shortstop for what proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Freshman Austin McAuliffe got the win in relief, working the last 4.1 innings and allowing a run on three hits in relief of starter Bobby Wyrwa. Esterlin Paulino, the last of six North Carolina A&T pitchers, took the loss.

2B Matt Tomczyk had three hits to lead NJIT, while Petrone, Jeffrey Pizzi and John Berner all collected two hits apiece for the Highlanders. Berner had three RBI, while Marc Prager and Tomczyk drove home two each. NJIT hit five doubles, two by Berner, and C Bryan Bleakley powered a home run.

Bleakley homered twice in the nightcap and finished with three RBI, backing his batterymate, Leiter. McCarthy also added a pair of hits for the Highlanders, who scored two in the first inning and three in the third en route to closing out the sweep.

The teams were scheduled to complete the weekend series with a single game Sunday afternoon.
