WBB: FGCU Combines for 46 Second Half Points; Tops Visiting NJIT


FORT MYERS, FL—FGCU scored 46 second half points, paced by a game-high 20 points from Taylor Goodall, leading the Eagles to a 73-53 victory over visiting NJIT in ASUN Conference action Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.

The Eagles stay perfect in the ASUN Conference at 4-0 and move to 15-6 overall while the Highlanders fall to 1-3 in the conference and 8-11 overall.

NJIT outscored FGCU in the first quarter, 17-13 and by two points in the second quarter, 16-14, holding a 32-27 lead at the half.  FGCU exploded for 30 points in the third quarter and outscored the visiting Highlanders, 16-7, in the final quarter, securing a 73-53 home victory.

FGCU's Haley Laughter led all scorers with 20 points, on 5-of-13 from behind the arc in 24 minutes of action off the bench.  The Eagles redshirt junior China Dow chipped in 13 points while redshirt senior Jordin Alexander added 12 points.

Freshman Tytionia Adderly pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds while Erica Nelson combined for nine points and a team-high six assists.

NJIT senior guard Alana Dudley paced the Highlanders with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field while dishing out six assists.  Redshirt sophomore guard Kelly Guarino netted 13 points, including three from downtown.

Forward Leah Horton just missed recording a double-double, adding nine points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  NJIT held a slight 40-to-36 advantage on the boards paced by Horton's 11.

Maria Ruban scored seven points for the Highlanders in 15 minutes of action off the bench.

FGCU scored the first four points of the game but the visitors answered with 15 straight, for its first lead of the game, 15-4.  NJIT's Horton sparked the Highlanders 15-0 spurt with a jumper off the glass just outside the box at the 8:05 mark.

The Eagles broke the scoring drought on a three-pointer by Taylor Gradinjan at 2:10 and Haley Laughter followed with a three-pointer of her own with 1:30 on the clock, slimming the Highlander lead to five, 10-15.

NJIT went ahead seven, 17-10, on a jumper by Horton with :20 seconds left to play in the quarter.  FGCU's Jordin Alexander connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the quarter, down four, 13-17.

To open the second quarter, Dudley sank a three-pointer for a seven-point lead, 20-13 but FGCU's Laughter knocked down a pair of trey balls, slimming the Highlander lead to three, 19-22, at the 7:29 mark.

The Highlanders pushed its lead back up to six, on a jumper by Jordan Ireland followed by one-of-two made by Dudley, for a 25-19 advantage. 

FGCU's Laughter connected with her third three-pointer in the quarter, sparking a 6-0 spurt as the Eagles knotted the game at 25 on an old-fashion three-point play by China Dow with 5:30 on the clock.

The Highlanders scored seven straight points – five from Dudley and a jumper in the paint from Maria Ruban, giving the visitors a seven-point lead, 32-25 with less than three to go.  FGCU's Dow converted a layup at 2:36 and NJIT's Ruban would score the final points of the first half with a jumper in the key, as the Highlanders held a six-point lead heading into halftime, 33-27.

Dudley led all scorers at the half with 15 points followed by Laughter with 12 points off the bench for the Eagles.

NJIT's Guarino started to heat up in the third quarter, knocking down two three-pointers for a 41-36 advantage.  FGCU went on a 6-0 run, taking its first lead of the second half, 42-41 on a three-pointer by Erica Nelson.   

The Highlanders regained the lead after a jumper from the left wing by Horton but Laughter answered with her fifth three-pointer of the game for a 45-43 score at the 4:26 mark.

The home team used an 8-0 run in the last 2:17 of the third quarter to hold a 57-46 lead.

FGCU scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to, 68-46, and went on to secure its 15th win of the season with a 73-53 win.
