NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Jacksonville was never threatened Tuesday night on the way to a 65-36 victory against NJIT in Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball played in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Dolphins, 13-7 overall, have won their last seven, including all A-Sun contests.
They are 11-3 since December 1, with all three losses coming in December against teams from the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, which ranked second out of 32 Division I conferences last season, according to the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
Jacksonville's top scorer on Tuesday was junior guard Sherranda Reddick, who netted 20 points after connecting on 7 of 14 field goal attempts, including 4-for-8 from 3-point distance. The Jacksonville native also made both of her free throws and pulled down 6 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Kayla Gordon scored 11 points for the winners, along with a game-high 9 rebounds, and Briona Brown added 10 points.
NJIT (3-17, 0-5 A-Sun) got 10 points and 6 rebounds from
Leah Horton.
Alana Dudley scored 9 points and redshirt freshman
Tatianna Torres equaled her career scoring high with 7 points coming off the NJIT bench. Torres and
Ronni Grandison both had 5 rebounds for NJIT.
Jacksonville scored the game's first four points and took a 10-2 lead on Jasmyn Brown's layup with 6:24 left in the opening quarter. The Dolphins later closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to end the period on top 19-6.
Neither team scored until well into the second quarter, when Gordon finally made a layup for the visitors after 5:35 had passed in the period. Reddick hit consecutive 3-pointers for JU and Christin Mercer made a layup that put Jacksonville on top, 29-6, with 1:20 left in the quarter.
With her team having gone scoreless in the second quarter, Torres got NJIT its first bucket on a layup with 35 seconds on the clock and then she made a steal and assisted Horton 20 seconds later.
Jacksonville's Briona Brown finished off the quarter with a 3-pointer from the top of the key ahead of the buzzer to send the teams into the locker room with JU holding a 32-10 advantage.
While NJIT made only four shots in the opening half, a larger part of its offensive difficulty could be traced to 25 turnovers in the half, which short-circuited the attack before the Highlanders could get a shot.
After hearing from coach
Steve Lanpher at halftime, the Highlanders made a drastic cut in their miscues, committing just 6 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.
That led to more shots and more baskets and the Highlanders scored 15 points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth.
Even so, Jacksonville's 65-36 advantage at the end of the game represented the largest lead of the night for the Dolphins.
NJIT, which was down to seven available players Tuesday night due to a variety of injuries, will go to Georgia to visit Kennesaw State in another A-Sun women's basketball game on Saturday at 2 pm.
