The season of charity never ends for the NJIT Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams. Just this past Sunday, the team volunteered at a 5k race in Branch Brook Park to help raise money for the Children's Hospital of New Jersey located in the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and also for the Randy Foye Foundation.
The 5k was called “Regina's Run” in honor of Randy Foye's mother. The race had a special celebrity appearance from Newark Native Randy Foye, who is a member of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team.
The NJIT Track and Field Team helped the race run smoothly by providing various race management skills. On that sunny Sunday morning at every corner on the course you would see someone from the team wearing an NJIT T-shirt enthusiastically cheering on the runners and making sure the runners were going the right way. Alumni captain and Graduate Student,
Ewelina Marut commented on the enthusiastic cheering coming from her team, “We know what it feels like to run a 5k, so we just wanted to be out here today supporting the runner's in the best way we could and know how.”
To further ensure that the race ran as smoothly as possible, the team had one of their own,
Kevin Ratigan ride a lead bike through the tight trails and grass so that the lead pack of runners would know where to go. It was a priority for the team to make sure that this event ran as smoothly as possible so that they could help raise the most money possible for the event.
The participating runners and walkers were ecstatic and very grateful for the Team's help; Sarah Manti a participant in the run commented on the team's help, “I've ran this race every year since it started, and by far you guys helped make this year the smoothest! Thanks for coming!” It was evident just from the atmosphere at the event that everyone was happy and felt the same gratitude that Manti did towards the team.
Head Coach
Al Alonso pointed out “I feel that it is important to help give back to the community and that is what my team did today helping with what they know best”.
From 6:30am that morning, the NJIT track and field team was helping with the setup, at registration, on the course, timing or cleaning up. At the end of the day it was announced that the amount of money fundraised was at a record high for the event, and the event was deemed a success!
A thank you and great job went out to the NJIT Track and Field Team for all the help!
