EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—
Chris Flores, a 2013 NJIT graduate and four-year basketball star who scored more than 1,700 career points, was one of six prospects brought in for a special pre-draft workout by the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association on Wednesday morning.
Flores, one of the most honored players in NJIT history and the school's leading scoring in its Division I era (1,724 career points), participated in the invitation-only closed session at the Nets' PNY Center training facility in East Rutherford.
Guided by Brooklyn's Director of Player Personnel Gregg Polinsky, Flores took part in the workout along with five other perimeter prospects as the Nets put together their plans for the 2013 NBA Draft, which they will host on June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Nets, who currently hold the 22nd pick in the first round of the 2013 draft, ran a similar pre-draft workout on Tuesday that included big man prospects, as well as more perimeter players.
Some of the more recognizable name players who showed their wares in the workout along with NJIT's Flores on Wednesday were:
Archie Goodwin, a guard who led the University of Kentucky in scoring in 2012-13;
Travon Woodall, a four-year standout who led the University of Pittsburgh in scoring last season; and,
Reggie Bullock, a small forward who averaged almost 14 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the University of North Carolina. University of Kansas center
Jeff Withey was among the half-dozen invitees who worked out for the Nets on Tuesday.
“The NJIT family is thrilled for Chris and the great opportunity he's been given to work out for the Nets,” said NJIT coach
Jim Engles. “It's a tribute to all he did in his four years here and it's a big thing for our program to see one our players get this kind of shot at a pro career.”
Flores, who averaged 16.9 points and 2.4 steals per game as a senior, was named Great West Conference Player of the Year in official voting by the conference coaches and sports information directors after leading the Highlanders to the 2012-13 GWC regular season crown. He was also consensus Player of the Year among media outlets that named their own all-conference teams.
Beyond that, he was named honorable mention on the Associated Press All-America team, as well as being voted onto the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District team for District 13 (the first Highlander voted all-district by the NABC since NJIT began Division I competition in 2006-07). He was also named third-team All-Met (NY, NJ, CT) by the Met Basketball Writers Association. On campus, he was named 2012-13 Male Athlete of the Year for the entire NJIT athletics program.
A native of the Dorchester area of Boston, Flores opened his senior year with 28 points in a 64-63 loss at Providence, which would finish its season by advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. That outburst equaled the NJIT Division I single-game scoring mark, which he had done earlier in his career and he would do later in the season. He would score 20 or more points in 11 different 2012-13 games and reached double-figures 24 times, including each of the last 14 regular season games.
Against NAIA opponent Fisher (MA), Flores scored 32 points in 23 minutes, making all 11 of his shots from the floor, including seven 3-point tries, and all three of his foul shots. His feat earned him Number 3 on the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 the following day and ESPN reported that it was the first time since 2007 that a player scored at least 30 points without missing a shot and making at least seven threes.
A four-year starter, Flores graduates as the program's Division I-era career leader in points (1,724; 5th overall); games played (122; overall program record); assists (330; 7th overall); and steals (212; 3rd overall).
Flores is the second NJIT player in as many years to continue to the next level.
Isaiah Wilkerson, who starred for the Highlanders from 2008 to 2012, played in 28 games last season for the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League. Tulsa, which is affiliated with the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, made Wilkerson its eighth pick in the 2012 D-League draft last November. Wilkerson preceded Flores as an AP All-America honorable mention, All-Met third team honoree, and Great West Player of the Year.
