WEST POINT, NY – The NJIT women's fencing team finished 14th out of 17 schools entered in the overall 3-weapon team standings at the 81st Annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships held on Saturday at Army.
The NJIT foil squad which consisted of Andrea Camargo, Kristen Hagen, and Jennifer Ramos finished 7th while the saber squad of Macarena Maldonado, Karen Cilento and Chanelle Preradovich placed 13th. An epee squad was not entered.
Camargo finished 9th on the foil A Strip with a record of 6-7. This record qualified her for the individual championship round, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Hagen finished 8th on the foil B Strip with a record of 7-6. Ramos placed 6th on the foil C Strip with a record of 8-5.
Maldonado, who has never fenced saber before was forced to switch weapons since NJIT didn't enter an epee squad. She finished 16th on the saber A Strip. Cilento finished 5th on the saber B Strip with a record of 8-6. Cilento, a first-year fencer for NJIT also made the NIWFA all-academic team for her dedication in the classroom and community service hours. Chanelle Preradovich, who joined the fencing team midway thru the year, finished 13th on the saber C Strip with a record of 4-10.
