Several NJIT hockey players attended the NJ Devils Alumni vs. Jersey City Police Dept. memorial game in honor of Detective MarcAnthony DiNardo who was slain in the line of duty last year.
The charity event raised more than $70,000 for an educational trust fund for the three young children of the 37-year-old officer who was killed in July as he participated in a door-to-door search for robbery suspects who had just shot another cop.
Some 3,000 people showed up at the Prudential Center in Newark to watch the match that featured the likes of former Devil stars Glenn "Chico'' Resch and Ken Daneyko.
DiNardo's widow, Mary, said she was overwhelmed by the support for her and the couple's children -- Gwendolyn, 4, Marc Anthony, 3, and Ella, 2.
"I think he's smiling. I think he is happy," Mary DiNardo said of her late husband, who played hockey from the time he attended grammar school. "Today he might be a little worried about his fellow officers on the ice but he is definitely very proud."
