JERSEY CITY, NJ – The NJIT men's and women’s tennis teams opened up its 2009 campaign hosting the NJIT Tennis Invitational at the Yanitelli Center on the campus of Saint Peter’s College Friday afternoon.

 

The Invitational was held at Saint Peter’s due to inclement weather.

 

Competing in the first flight of the Round Robin Pool, NJIT’s Carl Lundquist and Diego Abreu first opponents were Hofstra’s Alex Honser and Jason Sinkoff.  The Highlanders defeated the Pride 6-3.  Abreu, a junior transfer from Seward C.C.C. in Liberal, Kansas registered his first victory as a Highlander.

 

With the win, the Highlanders faced Saint Peter’s topping Robert Forai and Alex Frakes, 6-1.  In the semifinals, Lundquist and Abreu fell to Hofstra’s Chris Damion and Matt Wacks, 7-5. 

 

Seniors Stephen Erickson and Cosmin Chiujdea teamed up to defeat Hofstra’s duo Josh Levinson and Ben Thompson-Star, 7-5, in the first flight of the men’s doubles action.

 

In the quarterfinals, the Highlanders matched up against Monmouth’s Ian Terpilowski and Corey Forrest winning easily, 6-0, advancing to the next round.  Chiujdea and Erickson faced Saint Peter’s JJ Gramatica and Tony Wilkey in the semifinals defeating the Peacocks, 6-1 but the Highlanders suffered a 6-4 loss in the finals to Hofstra’s Damion and Wacks.

 

Senior Dimitri Athans teamed with Monmouth’s Laurence Head in the consolation quarterfinals topping teammate’s Dan Salomon and Bryan Keelan.   The partners went on to defeat Monmouth’s Terpilowski and Forrest but fell in the doubles consolation final to Saint Peter’s Sergi Igel and Popisil Lukas, 6-4.

 

On the women’s side, Highlanders’ Isha Toor and Nina Mayevska defeated Queens’ duo Kirby Reiss and Laura Mocodeanu, 6-4 advancing to the quarterfinal round.  Mayevaska, a junior transfer from Kingsborough Community College in Brookyln, NY, recorded her first victory as a Highlander but the pair was topped by Hofstra’s Brooke Sailer and Sonia Tsay, 6-4, in the semifinals.

 

Singles play will continue on Saturday morning, inside of the Yanitelli Center at 9:00am.
