NORFOLK, VA
– The NJIT men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at the Old Dominion Collegiate Invitational this past weekend at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

 

Senior Stephen Erickson competed in the singles Flight A-1 first round Saturday afternoon facing Liberty’s Sim Tuss falling in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.  Erickson defeated William & Mary’s Ilja Orre 8-7 (4) in the singles Flight A-1 consolation.

 

Classmate Cosmin Chiujdea reached to the semifinals in the Men’s B draw but fell by identical scores 6-4, 6-4 to hosts Krzysztof Muzalewski.   Chiujdea came up short 8-3 in the consolation roung against Villanova’s Mike Taylor.

 

Sophomore Dan Salomon defeated Howard’s Tonique Merrell 6-2, 6-2 in the men’s C draw advancing to the quarterfinals.  Salomon took on Liberty’s Ben Wirth falling 7-6 (6), 6-2.

 

NJIT’s doubles pair Diego Abreu and Carl Lundquist defeated East Carolina’s Ely Khoury and Bryan Oakley 8-6, but fell in the quarterfinals of the Flight A doubles draw to James Madison’s Jared Robinson and Greg Vladimirsky, 8-3.

 

Chiujdea and Erickson advanced to the semifinals of Flight C doubles draw where they were halted by Liberty’s Giancarlo Lemmi and Chad Simpson, 8-6.  The Highlanders duo defeated Howard’s Brandon Burns and Merrell in the first round advancing to the quarterfinals as they took a 8-4 victory from James Madison’s Stephen Hardy and Tommi Nissinen.

 

On the women’s side, senior Isha Toor defeated Navy’s Brittney Boucher in the women’s single flight C round of 16,  7-5, 6-2 advancing to the quarterfinals where Toor battled Georgetown’s Michelle Pratt in three sets but fell 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4).

 

Sophomore Anine Lovdal was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Navy’s Carissa Gutherie in the women’s singles Flight D draw.  Lovdal advanced to the quarterfinals to face Hofstra’s Paige Polizios taking a 6-1, 6-2 victory.  Lovdal reached the semifinals but fell to Campbell’s Lourdes Ros 6-2, 6-1.

 

Doubles pair Lovdal and Dasa Stanimirovic fell in the opening round of the doubles draw to Liberty’s Jordan Jenkins and Nadia Solomon-Burgess 8-4 before coming up short in the consolation round to Villanova’s Kristin Gobberg and Courtney Reed, 9-7.

 

The men’s tennis team will return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Stony Brook Invitational.  The women’s team is off until October 24 when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut for the Wilson/ITA East Regional’s.
