Day One Results
STONY BROOK, NY – The NJIT men’s tennis team competed at the 1st Annual Stony Brook Men’s Tennis Invitational Saturday.
The Invitational featured over 50 competitors from NCAA Division I, II, and III teams.
Senior Stephen Erickson the number-four seed in the men’s singles Flight A defeated Dowling's Victor Kim 8-6, advancing to the quarterfinals where he met Stony Brook's Halvar Dil. Erickson took the first set 6-3, but Dil won the next two sets 6-0, 10-8.
Highlanders’ Carl Lundquist took on Middlebury’s Andrew Peters the number-three seed in the men’s singles Flight A and fell, 8-5.
Senior Cosmin Chiujdea, seeded fourth in the men’s singles Flight B, was downed 8-5 by Middlebury’s Peter Ordell, 8-6.
NJIT transfer Diego Abreu faced host Roope Kailaheimo in the first round of the men’s singles Flight B but came up short, falling 8-6.
Dimitri Athans and Dan Salomon competed in the men’s singles Flight C and were knocked out in the first round by Concordia’s Andres Lindell, 8-2 and Middlebury’s Derrick Angle, 8-1.
In the doubles contests, Erickson and Chiujdea were 8-3 winners over Dowling's Saulo Gonzales and Kim in the first round of the doubles Flight A. In the quarterfinals, the NJIT duo was topped by Bowdoin’s Jaime Neely and Oscar Pena, 8-3.
Lundquist and Abreu defeated the number-two seeds, Middlebury’s Thompson and Lee, in the doubles Flight A advancing to the next round, where Lundquist and Abreu were downed 8-6 by Concordia doubles pair.
The Highlanders will wrap up the tournament Sunday.
