NEWARK, NJ -
Six players, including two reserves, reached double-figure scoring for New Jersey Institute of Technology in its 76-58 women's basketball win over visiting Georgian Court Tuesday.
The win raised NJIT's overall record to 16-10, matching the second-highest win total in the program's 19 seasons. This season's 16 wins match the 2002-03 team, which finished 16-12, and are second only to last season's 18-12.
Senior center Selena Kershaw, who is finishing her career in style, barely missed posting her sixth double-double in the last seven games. She led the Highlander scorers with 14 points against Georgian Court, but came up just short of the double-double, pulling down 9 rebounds.
Kershaw shared game rebounding honors with teammate Aine O'Dwyer and Georgian Court's Barbara Jones. O'Dwyer had a strong all-around game, with 11 points, 6 assists and a game-high 3 steals.
Following Kershaw in the scoring with 12 points apiece for NJIT were Jackie McCaffrey and Breanna Turnbull, who matched her career scoring high. The senior, who previously scored 12 against USP on January 5, 2003, came off the bench Tuesday to make both of her shots from the field and was 8-for-9 on foul shots.
Kelly Crowe finished with 11 points for the Highlanders and Jill Dickinson scored 10--eight in the second half--to round out the double-figure scorers for NJIT.
Georgian Court got a game-high 15 points from junior forward Amana Frost, while Jones, a freshman swing player, picked up 10 points to go with her team-leading 9 rebounds.
NJIT, which never trailed, scored the game's first seven points and led by as many as 14,
before settling into a 34-22 halftime lead. The first-half scoring for the Highlanders was balanced, as Turnbull scored a team-leading 7 points, followed closely by Kershaw, O'Dwyer and McCaffrey, all of whom had 6 points. Kamilah Bergman topped the Lions' first-half scorers, with 6 points.
NJIT maintained a double-digit bulge throughout the second half and its 76-56 advantage after a pair of Jessica Vogel free throws with 29 seconds left was the biggest lead of the game.
The Highlanders will close the 2005-06 on Saturday at 1 pm, when they host Post in the Fleisher Athletic Center. That contest will mark the final home games for the team's seniors, Kershaw, Turnbull, Vogel and Emese Gyuricza, who will be recognized in ceremonies before the opening tip.
